Meals Victoria
Meals Victoria Incorporated
The core business of a “Meals On Wheels” program is to provide service to people at nutritional risk and to monitor their physical and social well-being.
Meals Victoria (Victorian Meals on Wheels Association Incorporated) is dedicated to the continuous improvement, promotion, and sharing of information and ideas for all Meals on Wheels providers throughout metropolitan and regional Victoria. It is our aim to raise the public profile of this valuable service and acknowledge the efforts of the paid and volunteer workforce that help deliver this service.
Who do I contact to get Meals on Wheels?
Local Government is the main provider of meals on wheels in Victoria. The quickest way to find out about the service in your area is to ring your Local Council. See this list of Victorian Local Councils if you are unsure. If you’re enquiring on the part of a relative, check which Council their suburb is covered by first. If the local Council in your area does not provide meals they will be able to tell you who does. If you have any difficulties contact us for assistance.
How often are meals delivered and how much do they cost?
Meal delivery times, prices and menu choice all vary from service to service. Most provide one three-course lunch-time meal. Most deliver Monday to Friday and some offer weekends as well. Menu choice ranges from seven to one (meaning none) although most large providers offer at least two choices. Meal prices vary, although the average cost for a lunch-time, three course meal is around $5.00.
How do I know if I, or my relative is eligible for meals?
Meals on Wheels are partially funded by the Department of Human Services via the Home and Community Care Program. To receive this subsidy, all Meals on Wheels services have to assess their recipients. To be eligible for a subsidised meal service you must receive an aged or disability pension. The Local Council organises an assessment person to come and assess new recipients. In urgent circumstances this can sometimes occur after the service has commenced.
How can I volunteer for my local service or Meals Victoria?
Most Meals On Wheels services can always do with more volunteers, usually for delivering meals and sometimes in the kitchen. To find out if you can help out your local service, ring your Local Council. Meals Victoria receives a small annual subsidy each year from DHS to pay for meetings and expenses. All the committee members volunteer their time or fit their duties into their everyday workload (we have no central ‘office’). We always like hearing from people who might be interested in being on the committee and not just those with meals on wheels experience. If you work part time, are semi or fully retired and think you have any skills that may benefit the committee, email the President.
